International Girls in ICT Day 2025

The International Girls in ICT Day was successfully marked at the Makerspace of the Center for the Promotion of Science in Belgrade.

The International Girls in Information and Communication Technologies (ICT) Day was celebrated for the third consecutive year at the Makerspace of the Center for the Promotion of Science. This international day has been observed worldwide every fourth Thursday in April since 2010, following an initiative by the Republic of Serbia and the International Telecommunication Union (ITU), in response to the need to increase the number of girls and women in technology.

This year, 30 upper-grade elementary school girls from Belgrade had the opportunity to attend the workshop "Programming Music", led by Maja Milović, a student at the Faculty of Technical Sciences, University of Novi Sad.

Participants were introduced to the world of music programming through the ChucK programming language. Through a series of hands-on tasks and teamwork, the girls discovered how code can be used to compose rhythms, melodies, and sound effects. They learned how to program individual notes using simple lines of code, determining pitch, duration, and volume.

ChucK is known for its simple syntax and high flexibility, allowing users to creatively and intuitively manipulate sound and compose in real time.

At the start of the workshop, the participants were welcomed by the Acting Director of the Center for the Promotion of Science, Danijela Vučićević, UNDP Project Manager Sanja Arizanović, and the Director of the Petlja Foundation, Milan Simić. In their remarks, they emphasized the importance of encouraging girls to develop their technological skills, believe in their abilities, and explore the many opportunities that new technologies open up every day.

The International Girls in ICT Day was celebrated as part of the project "Building Key Computing Competencies – Toward the Workforce of the Future", implemented by the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), in partnership with the Petlja Foundation and the Ministry of Education, with support from the Government of the Republic of Serbia.
